TWENTY-FIVE

Knocking on her door the next morning brought her out of the shower. No one had visited since Knox and Jane said goodnight, but she checked the peephole anyway. Just in case Julietta had sent reporters.

Jane and Roxie. Shit.

She opened the door fast. “What are you doing here?” she asked, tucking in her towel as they came into the room.

“It won’t do,” Roxie said, propping herself by the TV on the dresser. “It won’t do at all.”

“What won’t do?” she asked, glancing at Jane.

“Zairn’s upstairs with Knox. They’re hatching some plan of their own.”

Wary, her neck prickled. “That could be a bad idea—”

“Teagan was a girlfriend of Cam, Knox’s brother,” Roxie said.

Surprised, she stumbled a couple of steps closer. “How do you know that?”

“She asked Zairn,” Jane said, passing to go sit on the end of the bed.

“You just asked him?”

“Yeah,” Roxie said, unapologetic. “How else would we find out who she is? And he’s smart enough to keep a lid on it around Knox.”

“I was surprised too,” Jane said. “But Rox has a point. Knowing that Julietta brought it up means Zairn knows what to look for. Knox would go crazy if anyone went after his baby brother. Even I wouldn’t be able to keep the reins on him and he listens to me about most things… even if he then goes and does the opposite.”

Roxie boosted herself up to sit on the dresser. “You underestimate your power. You’d be able to talk him down, honey; he’s wild about you. But we don’t need to be irritating any sore spots. Zairn will keep an eye out.”

“Did you tell Zach?”

She didn’t anticipate Jane’s question. “No, we… I only talked to him on Knox’s phone last night. I didn’t tell him anything.”

“Good. Zairn will keep the bulls in their chutes,” Roxie said. “Leaving us to deal with the bigger issue.”

“The bigger issue?”

Roxie opened her arms. “Who’s the daddy?”

“Oh, God,” she said, going to sink down by Jane on the bed. “Are we really going to keep doing this? Zach and I ended our relationship last night.” Jane put an arm around her. “It was more difficult than I thought.”

“It always is.” Roxie’s sympathy was appreciated. “I know it’s tough, but Julietta has forced our hand on this. It would just be too risky to—”

“I know,” she said, nodding. “Oh, I know. We don’t plan to sneak around behind Julietta’s back. There’s too much at stake.”

Everyone seemed eager to remind her that the relationship had to be over. Was love the difference? Her friends were with their forever people, did that skew their perspectives toward everyone being in the same position?

“What would you do if Zairn’s ex was holding something like this over him?”

“Roxie’s not an accurate barometer of sense.”

“Do as I say,” Roxie joked, “not as I do.”

“Actually…” Jane said, dipping closer. “‘What would Roxie do?’ is a sort of motto for saying to hell with everything.”

“Not everything,” Roxie said as they laughed. “In moments of doubt, it nudges you to live wild and crazy.
